According to a letter in my procession from a Father Eugene Bradley
dated
11-April-1980, John Bradley (Father Eugene's grandfather) born in County
Derry Ireland
in 1824, came to this country and settled in Hickory Maryland. Latter his
four brothers
came over and worked with him. The following is a direct quote from the
letter.
"Now as I recall my father telling me James or Uncle Jamey as he
called him was the
youngest and he was a roamer. Very so often he would take off and then
come back. In fact
he fought as a Rebel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. But in
his travels he visited
Pennsylvania and the Coal mines were just opening up and he told about
the fantastic wages
they were paying. So, they packed up and came to Cambria County in Pa.
James was not
married and lived with my grandfather and my father said he used to be
happy when the weather
was bad and "Uncle Jamey" would stay in and play the violen. Now there is
another side to the
story why they came and that was that they were slave drivers and had to
get out after the
Civil War and the blacks were liberated. But James went to Hastings and
is buried in the
Cemetary there."
