Notes for Bernard Francis BRADLEY:

Bernard was the 3rd oldest of eight brothers and one sister. He was born
and raised in Hastings Pa. and lived there until his older Brother was
killed in a minning accident.

After his brother Paul died in a coal minning accident in February of
1925, Bernard road the railroads to Califorina. Walter came to Michigan
looking for employment. Whoever found employment first would get in
contact with the other. Walter found a job in auto factory and sent for
Bernard. They lived in the East side of Detroit and he meet Eunice
Berneche.

In 1930 Bernard and his wife Eunice along with his oldest son Paul B. and
oldest daughter Joanne live in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan
with Bernard's mother Ada (Adaline). Also living there were the following
brother's and sister's, Joseph, Catherine, Gerald A., and Albert H. He
moved to Roseville (Erin Twp then) in 1936 where they raised five boys
and two girls in an 18' x 36' home, which had no plumbing and,
originally, no water.

Memmories
His gardening raising of the Trees, Rubarb and grapes........Boy was he
protective of those grapes. I still remember him chasing me away from
them before they were ripe enough to eat, funny thing was he never would
catch me. And when they were ripe enough to eat he seemed to let me sneak
into the grapes for awhile. Same thing with that old Cherry tree in the
front of that old white house........Boy did we ever have fun with that.
To this day I still love the smell of Pipe Tobacco, He must of had 10
different pipes and Tabacco.

EUNICE BRADLEY

The following was transcribed by Her Daughter Kathleen.
I recieved on October 10 2002

Notes

Eunice was the second eldest of five girls.
Raised and lived on the East side of Detroit until she married Bernard in
1926, who was one of seven boys with one sister. They moved to Roseville
(Erin Twp then) in 1936 where they raised five boys and two girls in an
18' x 36' home, which had no plumbing and, originally, no water.

Married for 56 yrs.

Began to loose eyesight in 1985. She has been totally blind for 10 years.
Lived in her own home until 7/99 (65 yrs)
Primary recent caregivers: Son, Don 1982-1995 (deceased) in her home.
Son, Paul, 1996-1999 (relocated) in her home
Lived with daughter, Kathy 1.5 yrs prior to Fair Acres
After the death of Don, all shared her care.

Her "speed -dial, programmable telephone" allowed her to keep track of
everyone's activities particularly after the loss of her sight. The
telephone number of anyone of importance to her was dialed by the touch
of one button.

She kept aware of current events via the radio and track of time with her
"talking watch.

Celebration of daily and Sunday Masses were an important part of her
life. Continued to receive communion when able to the end.

The Rosary and the Blessed Mary were VERY important to her.

Accomplishments:
Married and raised eight children
President, St. Athansius Alter Society
Supplied Sacred Heart and St. Athansius with lace edging for alter
linens. Produced many yards of crocheted lace.
Would bake 10-12 loaves of her families favorite raisin bread for
Christmas brunch each year until well into her 90s
In July "99 she recalled and recited a 5th grade elocution recitation
entitled "Somebody's Mother" (copy attached)

Enjoyed:
Mostly having her family near.
Her radio to keep her current on world events and Baseball,
The Detroit Tigers (and Ernie Harwell) were her all time favorite.
Interesting that Ernie has "retired" this week. She was a loyal fan even
when they were not winning. She would grumble if they were not playing
well, but would listen anyway.
Riding in the car. Has been known to drive to Bay City with friends to
have lunch.
Mom enjoyed trips to Black Lake, Tennessee and other placed with her
family.

Hobbies:
Card games - Preferred penny-ante Poker and Euchre or Pinochle. Oh,
those Sunday afternoon euchre marathons followed by dinner, which was
then followed by an evening of poker. In early years, these matches were
bi-weekly with sisters and their spouses. (She could beat her sons at
poker even though legally blind!), Knitting many items including afghans
for family members. Crocheting - church linens
Cake decorating that included wedding cakes for nieces, sons and
daughter. Reading which evolved into listening to "books on tape," and
old time music as blindness set in. Did not like relaxation tapes -
"They put her to sleep!"

Likes: Chocolate (any kind but particularly the expensive ones), ice
cream (butter pecan), icebox cookies, and chocolate milk shakes to the
end. Shared fond memories of her youth in Detroit and trips to Bob-Lo and
dancing on that boat and Tashmo boat trips to Algonac.
Favorite celebrations were Christmas and her birthdays because the entire
family would gather at these times.

Liturgical Readings from Order of Christian Funerals

Old Testament Wisdom 3:1-6, 9, p. 209
New Testament Paul to the Corinthians 5: 1, 6-10, P. 219

Thr following was recited by Grandma to Annette one piece at a time as
she would
remember it.

Grandma Bradley's recitation for elocution at 10 yrs. of age . 6/20/1999
In grade school, Grandma Bradley (Eunice) played a blind girl in the play
"Florinda, the Magic Rose" at St. Bernard's Grade School.

Somebody's Mother

The woman was poor, and old, and gray, and bent with the chill of a
winter's day. She stood at the crossing and waited long uncared for by
the throng of human beings who passed her by nor heeded the glance of her
anxious eye. Then down the street with the laughter and shout glad of the
treat that school let out come the boys like a flock of sheep hauling the
snow piled white and deep. Passed the old woman so old and gray I
hastened the children on their way. Nor offered a helping hand to her, so
weak, so timid afraid to stir lest the carriage wheels or the horses feet
should tramp her down in the slippery street. At last comes one of the
merry troop the gayest laddy in all the group. He passed beside her and
whispered low "I'll help you across if you wish to go." So her frail hand
on his firm, young arm she placed. And so, without hurt or harm he guided
the trembling feet along proud that his own were firm and strong. Then
back again to his friends he went his young heart happy and well content.
"She's somebody's mother boys, you know for all she is poor and old and
slow. And I hope some fella will lend a hand to help my mother you
understand. If ever she is poor and old and gray and her own dear son is
far away.
